Kansas Contractor License Requirements: 2026 Comprehensive Guide

Kansas state flag

Kansas has no statewide GC license or registration requirement, with one exception. All roofing contractors must obtain a Roofing Contractor Registration Certificate from the Kansas Attorney General, statewide, for any roofing work for a fee. This makes Kansas unique: the AG, not a contractor board, administers the only statewide contractor registration that exists. All other GC licensing in Kansas is local. This guide covers what Kansas contractors need in 2026.

Roofing - Statewide AG Registration Required

Under the Kansas Roofing Registration Act (effective July 1, 2013), all roofing contractors must obtain a Roofing Contractor Registration Certificate from the Kansas Attorney General. This applies to both residential and commercial roofing work. No dollar threshold - any roofing work for a fee requires registration. Registration requires proof of insurance and bond (verify current amounts at ag.ks.gov). Verify current registration fee at ag.ks.gov before applying.

No Statewide GC License

All non-roofing GC work in Kansas has no statewide licensing or registration requirement. General construction, remodeling, and specialty work (except roofing) are regulated only at the local level.

Local GC Requirements

Wichita requires contractor registration with bond and insurance before pulling permits. Kansas City, KS has a contractor license requirement. Overland Park has separate contractor requirements. Always verify with the local building department. Note: Kansas City, KS and Kansas City, MO are adjacent - contractors working across the state line need to track both states' requirements separately.

Specialty Trades and WC

Plumbers are licensed through the Kansas State Plumbing Board. Electricians are administered primarily through local jurisdictions. WC required for employers. Kansas private WC market.

Pro tip: Kansas roofing registration at the AG’s office is actively enforced, especially after storm events. Kansas experiences significant hail damage and out-of-state roofing contractors flood in after major storms, and the AG’s office knows it. Register with the AG before starting any roofing work in Kansas, not after your first inspection on site.

Bottom Line and Next Steps

Kansas’s roofing registration by the AG is the one statewide contractor requirement. All other GC licensing is local. The AG, not a contractor board, administers the roofing program, which is an unusual arrangement that catches some roofing contractors off guard.

Take the Next Step

Insurance requirements, license requirements, and market premiums are subject to change alongside state legislation and carrier appetite. While we audit and update this data regularly to ensure reliability (Last Updated: May 2026), these figures are for research and planning purposes only. Always verify specific coverage mandates with your local licensing board or a licensed broker.
