Alaska Contractor License Requirements: 2026 Comprehensive Guide

Alaska state flag

Alaska requires registration for any paid construction work, no dollar minimum. The Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing (CBPL) administers the program. Unlike Hawaii, Alaska requires no exam for the General Contractor registration. A Residential Contractor Endorsement does require a separate exam for new residential construction. All Alaska contractor licenses expire September 30, 2026, the next biennial renewal. This guide covers every Alaska requirement in effect for 2026.

License Types

General Contractor: may perform new home construction, commercial work, and residential remodel. Bond: $25,000.

General Contractor with Residential Contractor Endorsement: adds authorization for new 1-4 unit residential construction. Bond: $20,000 (reduced with endorsement).

Specialty Contractor: limited to specific specialty work. Bond: $10,000.

Mechanical Contractor: plumbing, heating, HVAC. Bond: $10,000.

Handyman Contractor: projects with aggregate contract price of $10,000 or less per project. Bond required.

No Exam for GC Registration

Alaska's General Contractor registration requires no exam. Alaska is a registration/compliance system for GC work. The Residential Contractor Endorsement is the exception - it does require a separate exam covering residential construction knowledge.

Bond Options

Surety bond OR Certificate of Deposit (cash deposit) OR other negotiable security. CD cannot be released until three years after the contractor ceases business. GL insurance required - must be from an Alaska-admitted carrier OR have an AOS endorsement specifically stating coverage for Alaska activities. Certificate must list CBPL as certificate holder. Proof of insurance required.

September 2026 Renewal - Action Required

All Alaska contractor licenses were aligned to September 30 of even-numbered years effective October 1, 2023. All currently licensed Alaska contractors must renew by September 30, 2026. Application form was updated September 3, 2025. Verify current application fees and renewal requirements at commerce.alaska.gov. WC required for employers. Extensive electrical reciprocity with 12+ Western and central US states.

Pro tip: Alaska’s WC insurance for out-of-state contractors has a nuance that catches many off guard. Your policy must either be from an Alaska-admitted carrier OR include an AOS (All Other States) endorsement with language specifically stating it covers Alaska activities. A generic AOS endorsement that does not name Alaska explicitly may not satisfy Alaska requirements. Verify your WC policy language with your carrier before mobilizing any employees to Alaska.

Bottom Line and Next Steps

Alaska’s no-exam GC registration is unusual for a state with otherwise relatively meaningful requirements. The Residential Contractor Endorsement adds an exam step for residential new construction. The September 30, 2026 renewal deadline affects all currently licensed Alaska contractors.
